 Alaska Cruises to College Fjord
College Fjord

Located in the Prince William Sound, this picturesque cruise is offered by several major cruise lines including Carnival, Holland America and Princess Cruises. The fjord contains a large concentration of glaciers, with tidewater glaciers that terminate in the water, valley glaciers and many smaller glaciers. This is the one place in Alaska where one is truly surrounded by glaciers on all sides.

Visitors will not only get to enjoy views of the Harvard Glacier, the largest at roughly 225 feet high and 1 1/2 miles wide, but over a dozen others, such as the Yale, Amherst, Smith, Vassar and Wellesley. These glaciers were all named by members of the Harriman Expedition party, a group of scholars, scientists and artists who explored the area in the late 1800's and named the glaciers for their own alma maters.

As if their majestic splendor alone were not enough, the glaciers provide added excitement by calving on a regular basis. Calving is when a huge piece of glacier ice breaks off and crashes into the water, creating a spectacular display and a thunderous sound that resonates throughout the fjord. Marine wildlife is also a wonderful accompaniment to glacier viewing, as sea otters, harbor seals and whales are a common sight here.
