 Alaska Cruises to Haines Alaska
Haines Alaska

This small community of roughly 2,400 residents is located on the shores of the Lynn Canal, North America's longest Fjord, and is about 15 miles by water from the town of Skagway. Originally inhabited by Tlingit Indians, Haines was founded as a frontier town in 1880 by a Presbyterian minister. Rich in Gold Rush history and Alaskan lore, as well as many Native Alaskan artifacts, it is the site of the famous Dalton Trail, which connected gold miners to the interior during the late 1890’s.

Each fall, Haines population swells with an unusual group of residents-those of the winged variety. Several thousand eagles descend every year to feed on the chum salmon running in the Chilkat River. The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve is located on the Chilkat flats and has dedicated 48,000 acres as a refuge for the birds, making this area home to one of the most concentrated bald eagle populations in existence.

With a heavy focus on tourism, Haines offers visitors plenty of choices in regard to accommodations and restaurants. There are several hotels, as well as smaller inns and bed and breakfasts. Restaurants (many open seasonally only) range from fine dining to family style with surprisingly diverse cuisines.

In addition to eagle viewing, activities in Haines range from hiking, fishing and enjoying the outdoors to exploring Alaskan history at the local museums. Several companies offer shore excursions that include bicycle rentals, nature hikes and flightseeing. The Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center, which occupies the original Presbyterian mission and is located on the corners of Main and Front Streets, showcases much of the history of the Chilkat Valley as well as local art and events. Explore Fort Seward, an army post built in 1903 during a border dispute with Canada and currently home to Haine's Center for the Arts which displays Tlingit arts and crafts. Or simply stroll through downtown and soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era, where Alaska is truly depicted as The Last Frontier.
